Donnie Thompson Sets All-Time Highest Total – 3,000 lbs!

Long time AtLarge Nutrition sponsored athlete Donnie Thompson has done it again! The mastodon of power (he tipped the scales at nearly 400 lbs with ridiculously huge rhino-like proportions) competed at the Powerstation Pro-Am in Covington, KY this past weekend. His 3,000 lbs (1,265 lbs squat, 950 lbs bench press, and 785 lbs deadlift) total was the all-time highest ever!

Donnie wasted no time in chasing the record opening up in the squat with 1,265 lbs… You read that right; his OPENER was 1,265 lbs (which would be a squat all-time record)! Some drama was added to the proceedings when Donnie was unable to make his first attempt (of 3 allowed) due to not making it to the platform before being called for time.

Donnie made it to the platform in time for his 2nd attempt and got the record setting lift. He chose to pass on his 3rd attempt and it was off to the bench press. Once again defying common wisdom he opened with 905 lbs.  He missed his opener unable to get the bar to touch correctly on his chest. In a move that many questioned Donnie UPPED his 2nd attempt to another all-time record of 950 lbs (full meet bench press record). He proceeded to grind the lift out and a 3,000 lbs total loomed on the horizon.

Donnie hadn’t deadlifted in training since 2008… Yes, we know… His personal best is well over 800 lbs and all he needed for the elusive 3,000 lbs total was a 785 lbs pull. He opened with 740 lbs and pulled it raw (no special equipment). He then took 785 lbs for his second attempt and nailed it for the 3,000 lbs total he has sought for so long.

Donnie is usually not an overly emotional man on the platform, but on this day he was literally bursting with joy and a sense of relief at finally reaching a goal he has sought for years.

Congratulations to Donnie!
