David Hoff on Warming Up

Dave Hoff is a strength sports freak of nature having set the 2nd highest all-time total in powerlifting (2,910 lbs) in the 275 lbs weight class (outperforming men 100+ lbs heavier than him)!  This mind blowing accomplishment has been accomplished at the tender age of only 23 years old…  Listen to what he has to say.

WARMING-UP FOR STRENGTH TRAINING

Never underestimate the importance of a proper warm-up.  I am not a huge believer in total body warm-up schemes; rather I use exercise specific warm-ups.

Warming-up properly helps to prevent injury and to add volume to your training.  Studies have shown that properly warmed-up muscles function more effectively which translates to bigger lifts for strength trainees.

Below is a sample warm-up for a person with a previous 250 lbs bench press one rep max  (1RM) going for a new record:

95 lbs x 15

135 lbs x 10

185 lbs x 5

225 lbs x 2

255 lbs x 1 (new 1RM)!

The stronger the lifter the more warming-up that needs to be done.  Remember, the purpose of the warm-up is to prime your muscles and nervous system for the working sets, not to fatigue them.

Subsequent exercises for the same body part require fewer, if any, warm-up sets.

Warm-up properly and you will be taking yet another step towards the achievement of your goals.
